Notes
- Berry revised his first three Port William novels in order to correct inconsistencies with the later novels.
- Larkspur Press is a fine edition press in Monterey, KY. These books typically are small, less than fifty pages, and contain a single short story.
Library of America Port William Collection
- Port William Novels & Stories (The Civil War to World War II) (2018)
- Port William Novels & Stories (The Postwar Years) (2024)
- The LOA site refers to a third volume in the series but I cannot find any more information on when it will be published.
Fiction, in chronological order (incomplete, ongoing project)
A note on stories not explicitly dated in the text: Since some of Mr. Berry’s stories are framed as recollections, I will date them according to the narrator’s point of view. For example, “Pray Without Ceasing” is dated from Andy Catlett’s point of view as he learns the story of Ben Feltner’s death, which happened many years before. Since memory is a major theme of the stories, this has the advantage of framing them as memories of a certain person at a certain time with a certain point of view, not bare narrative chronology.
